Certificate in Gender, Theology, and Ministry

Duke Divinity School is very proud to announce a new Certificate Program in Gender, Theology, and Ministry.  This certificate can be earned within any of our degree programs.

Our students asked for the opportunity to do gender studies within a theological framework. They told us that they wanted to learn how to minister to women and men in a way that is liberating, empowering, and consistent with Christian discipleship and community. They told us that they wanted to create a network within the Divinity School where they could discuss issues of race and gender together. They said they wanted to learn how an understanding of the Word incarnate could provide healing and redress for abuses of power locally and worldwide. — We listened.

Why participate in the program?

  • The program gives you the opportunity to conduct gender studies in the context of your theological education and formation for the ministry.
  • The program allows you to design and execute an original project, working closely with mentors from affiliated faculty, staff, and church leaders. The project may be research oriented or service oriented, depending on your interests.
  • Through the senior colloquium, the program provides you with opportunities to share your work and your experiences, and discuss important issues at the intersection of gender, theology, and ministry.
  • The program plugs you into a network of peers and mentors who will guide and support you in your present and future endeavors.

The goal of the certificate program is to equip students to address the following:

  1. the way gender has shaped agency within the church
  2. the function of gender in the (normative) theological thinking of the church
  3. contemporary issues of ministry (authorization of women’s ministry, ordination, domestic violence, gender & language/liturgy/symbolism, gender and the globalized church/state/economy)
