Field Education

Notes from the Field

Follow the progress of 10 Duke Divinity School students this summer as they explore their vocational identity through 10-week field education placements across the country and around the world.

Read and post comments to blogs maintained by five students in U.S. placements and five more abroad.

Almost 200 Duke Divinity students are in various field education settings this summer.

Field Education provides an opportunity for students to discern their vocational identity through contextual learning. Settings vary, from parish to non-profit and from domestic to international.

Two units of field education—either through full-time summer terms of 10 weeks or part-time academic terms (10-15 hours per week) of 30 weeks—are required for graduation in the Master of Divinity degree program.

Students may self-initiate placements under the guidelines of the Office of Field Education or seek placement by the Field Education Office. Through the generosity of the Rural Church Division of the Duke Endowment, based in Charlotte, NC, placements in Endowment-eligible churches and agencies in North Carolina provide substantial stipend/tuition assistance.

The summer 2008 stipend/tuition assistance for Endowment-eligible placements was $8,500 per student. Other summer 2008 placements assisted up to $7,500 per student. The 2008-2009 academic term Endowment-eligible placements will provide $8,500 per student in stipend/tuition assistance. Other placements will assist up to $7,500 per student.
