Scholarships and Grants

Students applying for admission to the M.Div., M.T.S. and Th.D. degrees are automatically considered for scholarships. The following scholarships are awarded for August admission on the basis of merit and require full-time enrollment.

To retain all scholarships, students must maintain satisfactory academic progress.

Divinity Fellowships at Duke (M.Div.)

(Entering Students) Full Tuition

To be considered, students must have a minimum 3.5 GPA from their undergraduate or graduate program and have started the candidacy process for ordination in the UMC or the process that leads to ordination in another denomination. Recipients must enroll in four courses per semester.

Fellows will also receive a full-time summer field education placement in one of 14 teaching congregations from across the country.

Divinity Rural Fellowships

(Entering Students) Full Tuition

Awards are given to students from WNC and NC annual conferences who exhibit a calling and passion for leadership in rural North Carolina. Rural ministry fellows are appointed to serve a 10-week summer field education placement in one of our six Duke partner congregations serving rural NC at the end of their first year.

Duke Scholarship (M.Div.)

(Entering Students) Full Tuition

Award is based on academic achievement and exceptional promise for ordained or diaconal ministry.

Distinguished Service Scholarship (M.Div.)

(Entering Students) 75% of Tuition

This award is given to students who combine outstanding leadership and service to the church.

Dean’s Scholarship (M.Div.)

(Entering Students) 75% of Tuition

This award focuses on minorities, mission interests, and denominational needs.

M.L.King, Jr. Scholarship (M.Div.)

(Non-renewable) awards of $2,000 are awarded to first-year ethnic minority students who demonstrate need, outstanding promise for ministry, and strong academic performance.

Duke Evangelism Fellowship (Th.D.)

(Entering Students) Up to Full Tuition plus stipend

Awards are available to candidates with demonstrated interest in teaching evangelism.

Need-Based Tuition Grant

(Entering & Returning Students)

Need-based tuition grants of 33% are available for the first-year M.Div. students and 25% for students in the M.Div./M.S.W. dual degree program. M.T.S. students may receive up to 22% each year and returning students also receive 22%.
