Lifelong Learning

Overview

“[Seminaries should be] institutions of lifelong learning, becoming involved with people at younger ages, with laity in other vocations and with pastors throughout their ministry in a way that will be deeper and richer than the common contemporary model of continuing education.”
— Dean L. Gregory Jones, in Resurrecting Excellence: Shaping Faithful Christian Ministry

At Duke Divinity School, we understand that ministry is the vocation of every believer. Each of us has a ministry to enact, some as ordained clergy and others as laypeople in a variety of professions. No matter the context of our work, each of us understands that our faith is the foundation for our work in the world. Through its programs in lifelong learning, the Divinity School seeks to help strengthen your faith by building your knowledge about the church and its practices.

We hope that you will regularly check the content of this website or register for our mailing list. Here you will find programs of all sorts and sizes, from one-day lectures to weeklong seminars to international pilgrimages. Here you will find ways to learn about a ministry of reconciliation or about caring for people at the end of life. You also will find programs that will strengthen your capacity to lead the church, as well as sessions designed to increase your knowledge of the church's scripture, tradition and theology.

Whether you’re a teenager curious about theology, a layperson seeking a deeper understanding of scripture and liturgy,a pastor wanting to explore “the more excellent way” of pastoral leadership, or a leader of an organization wanting to faithfully serve the church, we invite you into the world of lifelong learning at Duke Divinity School.
