L. Gregory Jones
Dean and professor of theology

L. Gregory Jones has served since 1997 as the 11th dean of Duke Divinity School. Dean Jones is widely recognized as a scholar and church leader on such issues as forgiveness and reconciliation, Christian leadership, Christian vocation, and strengthening the church and its ministry. His leadership as dean has been marked by significant growth in the Divinity School. Major initiatives during his tenure include the Duke Institute on Care at the End of Life, the Reynolds Program in Church Leadership, the Learned Clergy Initiative, the Duke Youth Academy for Christian Formation, the Clergy Health Initiative, the Doctor of Theology program and a partnership with the Methodist Church of Southern Africa. He is the author or editor of 13 books, including the co-authored "Resurrecting Excellence: Shaping Faithful Christian Ministry." Dean Jones also has published more than 100 articles in a variety of publications.

David Odom
Executive director

David L. Odom joined Leadership Education at Duke Divinity in August 2007. Before coming to Duke, he was the founder and president of the Center for Congregational Health in Winston-Salem, N.C. Created in 1992, the center supports healthy communities of faith through consultation, leadership development, interim ministry training and vocational discernment. Odom has extensive experience in program development and evaluation, staff and adjunct faculty development, and strategic organizational management. He also played a leadership role in the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship’s Sustaining Pastoral Excellence grant.



Janice Virtue
Executive director

Prior to joining Leadership Education at Duke Divinity, Janice Virtue served 10 years as associate dean for continuing education at Duke Divinity School. In that position, she oversaw the creation and development of an array of pastoral learning programs including the Royce & Jane Reynolds Program in Church Leadership, the Duke Youth Academy for Christian Formation and Courage to Serve. She has long experience with a variety of Lilly Endowment programs and with program design and delivery. Before coming to Duke, she was director of Perkins relations at Perkins School of Theology, Southern Methodist University.
