Programs for Institutional Leaders

Christian institutions, such as seminaries, colleges, judicatories and denominational offices, have long helped to select, teach and nurture candidates for pastoral ministry. The new programs Leadership Education at Duke Divinity is developing target these institutions because of their influence over congregational life.

Foundations of Christian Leadership and Management

This year-long, four-session course will help build the leadership capacity of recently appointed institutional leaders and those who show promise to move into executive positions. The course will draw upon insights gained from the Divinity School’s extensive experience in leadership development programs for clergy and evolving partnerships with executive education programs at Duke. An open application program, each course will enroll 24 participants. As Leadership Education at Duke Divinity builds its capacity, the program will be offered four times each year, with the first course beginning in late fall 2008.

Senior Christian Leadership and Management Series

This series will offer an in-depth exploration of institutional leadership for more seasoned leaders and will focus, in part, on specific issues that inevitably face institutional leaders. Examples include advanced fund-raising; accessing capital and managing debt for major initiatives; managing transitions; developing strategic plans; and recruiting, managing and developing top talent.

Episcopal Leadership Forum

Begun in 2005, the forum has gathered more than a dozen United Methodist bishops twice a year to support their growth as church leaders. Collaboration on shared challenges, as well as learning best practices from a variety of leaders, forms the key work of the forum.

Custom Programs

Leadership Education at Duke Divinity will create custom programs to coach and equip leaders of specific institutions and their key team members. The program will also serve as a resource consultant to a variety of constituents.
