Programs for Pastors

Duke Divinity School has been a pioneer in creating learning programs that have changed the nature of continuing education for pastors. Several established programs will become part of Leadership Education at Duke Divinity. The initiative will also include a new program for young clergy leaders, as well as custom programs.

The Royce & Jane Reynolds Program in Church Leadership, a collaborative effort between the Divinity School and the Center for Creative Leadership, is a program for clergy in the United Methodist Church.

Courage to Serve is a 15-month series of quarterly retreats for clergy in rural churches.

The Institute of Preaching is an intensive series of retreats designed to help pastors from Florida and Western North Carolina.

Course of Study for Ordained Ministry, established by the United Methodist Church, is an alternate route to ministry.

Sustaining Pastoral Excellence, a grant program created by Lilly Endowment Inc. to help maintain the high caliber of many of the country’s pastoral leaders, is coordinated by Leadership Education at Duke Divinity. Since 2002, Lilly has awarded funds to more than 63 agencies, including seminaries, denominational offices, retreat centers and other educational institutions.

Young Leaders Program will be developed to equip young clergy with the skills and capacity to grow in their ministry.

Duke Youth Academy for Christian Formation is a two-week program for high school students who want to live in an intentional Christian community. While it does not target those who are already pursuing ordained ministry, it is an effort to encourage young people to think deeply about their vocation.
