Re-connecting Role and Soul: Courage to Serve Reunion

Program Description

Over the last four years, Courage to Serve has sought to provide rural pastors in North Carolina the chance to reconnect to the soul’s deepest wisdom about faithful service. In this reunion we will create a safe space – a circle of trust – where participants can explore once again the best ways to connect role and soul and examine anew the relationship between the inner life and outer work.

This retreat will follow the familiar pattern of the seasonal retreat series. Guided by our boundary markers (“no fixing,” “speak for self”, “invitation not demand,” etc.) we will create a disciplined space where we can each listen carefully for God to speak to us. We will use a variety of third things to prompt personal and shared reflection and we will have the chance to participate in modified clearness committees. Over meals, we can connect with each other about the changes in our lives and renew friendships formed in the seasonal retreats.

Program Leaders

Russ Moxley and Janice Virtue have served as program guides for Courage to Serve since its beginning in 2004. In addition to Courage to Serve, Russ and Janice collaborate on a variety of programs including initiatives in leadership development and pastoral excellence. Until April 2002, Russ was a Senior Fellow and Director of Nonprofit Initiatives at the Center for Creative Leadership in Greensboro, NC. Now he works as an independent trainer, consultant, facilitator and executive coach for nonprofit and for-profit organizations. Janice is the executive director of Leadership Education at Duke Divinity, where she continues to focus her energy on developing programs and seminars that help clergy and denominational leaders offer their best service to the church.
