Through the Valley of the Shadow: Pastoral Ministry and End of Life Care
A District Event with Dr. Richard Payne and Jeanne Twohig, February 26-28, 2007 at Springmaid Beach Resort in Myrtle Beach.
Program Description
Many pastors say that their hardest pastoral conversations come when they are trying to help parishioners think through ethical issues around end of life care. These conversations are difficult not just because of the nature of the subject matter itself but also because many pastors feel that they do not have the expertise to advise parishioners what the best course of action might be in a given situation. On February 26-28, pastors have the opportunity to learn more about end of life care and the related ethical issues from Dr. Richard Payne, an internationally known expert in the field and director of the Institute for Care at the End of the Life at Duke Divinity School, and Jeanne Twohig, the deputy director of the Institute, by participating in a multi-district event at Springmaid Beach Resort in Myrtle Beach.
Faculty
Dr. Richard Payne is an internationally-known expert in the areas of pain relief, care for those near death, oncology and neurology. Payne has served on numerous panels and advisory committees, many at the national level. He has given expert testimony to the Congressional Black Caucus National Brain Trust and the President's Cancer Panel in the area of healthcare access disparities in cancer care, palliative medicine and end-of-life care. He also has received a Distinguished Service Award from the American Pain Society, of which he is president; the Humanitarian Award from the Urban Resources Institute; and the Janssen Excellence in Pain Award.
Jeanne Twohig is a nationally known leader in end of life care, and has an extensive background spanning 30 years in health systems planning and administration. She co-authored the Northwest Montana Health Systems Plan, was instrumental in designing and implementing the first Home and Community-Based Services Medicaid waiver program in Montana, and has managed primary medical care and home care agencies. Twohig’s passion for caring for vulnerable populations prompted her to spearhead development of a community health center for the uninsured and she became the founding Executive Director of Partnership Health Center, a medical, dental and mental health clinic in Missoula. She has served as Deputy Director since the program’s inception in 1997 and has been instrumental in creating new knowledge about the delivery of palliative care, particularly to vulnerable and underserved populations.
