Keynote Lecture

Dr. Grant Wacker
Billy Graham's Legacy: For America and for Christian Living
Friday, April 24 -7:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m.

"In the span of slightly more than two decades 1949 to 1971-, the Protestant evangelist Billy Graham moved from leader to celebrity to icon. Now ninety years old and frail, Graham quietly spends his days in his mountain home in Montreat, North Carolina. In this discussion, we will think about the achievements and, inevitably, the shortcomings of a titanic life played on the world's stage. We also will think about how the angular fundamentalism of the 1940s evolved into the adaptive evangelicalism of the 2000s.

The aim is to help Christian laity, clergy, and church officials evaluate Graham's ministry both more critically and more faithfully, and then to apply its lessons to their own. When did the culture use Graham? When did he use it? When was the relation unproductive? When was it productive? Using Graham's work as a resource, all people of faith should find ourselves better positioned to distinguish the passing from the lasting in the Christian and, especially, in the evangelical stream of the Christian tradition. Billy Graham holds a secure place on the Mount Rushmore of American religious icons. The challenge is to separate the man from the mountain.
