Lay Academy of Religion
Join Duke Divinity School for a year-round program of lay education through the Lay Academy of Religion. Varieties of classes are offered to people who want to learn more about the Bible, the history of the Church, and the faithful life. Through this ministry, the Divinity School seeks to encourage ongoing theological study by laity.
Lay Academy courses are offered in Durham and around the state of North Carolina. Durham courses meet over a period of several weeks and are taught by Divinity School faculty and guest instructors. Courses in other locations around the state are offered in conjunction with local churches and vary in length. Each course gives participants the chance to study with a few of the country’s best religious scholars.
Lay Academy classes are typically two hours in length, and offered as multi-session classes over 3 or 4 weeks.
Morning courses are offered 9:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. at Epworth UMC, located at the corner of University Drive and Hope Valley Road in Southwest Durham.
Evening courses are held 7:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. at Amity UMC, on 825 N. Estes Dr. in Chapel Hill (near Horace Williams Airport)
