Rooted in a Christian vision and hosted by the Center for Reconciliation, this one-of-a-kind, five-day intensive institute serves to nourish, renew, and deepen the capacities of Christian leaders in the ministry of reconciliation, justice, and peace.

Who Is Right for the Program

Christians engaged in grassroots ministries and social agencies, congregations, pastoral and lay leadership, global contexts of community building across divides, the university or seminary, parachurch ministries, social entrepreneurship, or denominational work. We strongly encourage groups from communities, churches, ministries, and institutions to come together.

Overview

Limited to 250 participants and held in the restful setting of Duke University, the 2010 Summer Institute offers a community of learning among diverse peers and intimate interaction with a leading faculty of practitioners and theologians. You will experience in-depth teaching, prayer and worship, shared meals, wrestling with real contexts and challenges, and opportunity to reflect on your own vocation and setting.

Daily Design

Sample of Summer Institute Daily Schedule

    Morning & Evening Prayer

Participants begin and end each day with vibrant Christian worship, held in Duke Divinity School’s beautiful Goodson Chapel and other locations.

    Morning Common Journey

All participants gather to engage plenary speakers around a theological vision and practice of reconciliation through themes of lament, hope, Christian imagination, leadership, and a spirituality for the long haul.

    Afternoon In-Depth Seminars

Participants select one afternoon seminar for the entire week, going in-depth with one or two faculty members and 15-20 peers in a format of rich teaching and interaction.  For a taste of what will be offered, see the syllabi from the 2009 Summer Institute seminars.

Other Activities

Shared meals, faculty available for one-on-one consultation, some evenings free, some evenings with music and performances, and access to the many gifts of Duke University’s campus.

Faculty and Focus

The focus on reconciliation is grounded in a distinctively Christian "word made flesh" vision and framework. Birthed out of the Duke Center for Reconciliation's mission to form and strengthen Christian leaders in the ministry of reconciliation, the Summer Institute reflects the theological, contextual, and practical strengths of a faculty of world-class scholars and practitioners.
