The Price of Her Life

Art Show on AIDS and the Church Displays Work of Divinity Student

January 15, 2008

Art work by Bethany Tobin, a master of theological studies student, on AIDS and the church is on exhibit at the Duke Divinity School Library until March 30.

The exhibit, “The Price of Her Life,” features images in various media of a young woman named Sombong, whom Tobin and her family met in Thailand. Sombong's family sold her into the sex trade but refused to help her with medical care when she contracted AIDS. A full narrative by Tobin about this young Thai woman's experience and death accompanies the exhibit.

An artist's reception will be held Wednesday, January 30 at 12:30 p.m. in the Baker Room of the library during which Tobin, who is on leave this spring from the Divinity School, will speak about her art.

The exhibit coincides with an AIDS conference, “The Least of These--The Church's Response to HIV/AIDS,” being sponsored January 28 by the Divinity School Office of Black Church Studies and by Partners in Caring of Duke University Medical Center.

The Divinity School Arts Committee is sponsoring the art exhibit. For more information, contact Roger Loyd at roger.loyd@duke.edu.
