Bishop Kenneth L. Carder Presents Inaugural Lecture

Bishop Kenneth L. Carder, the Ruth W. and A. Morris Williams, Jr. Professor of the Practice of Christian Ministry, will present an inaugural lecture Tuesday, Feb. 12

Bishop Kenneth L. Carder, the Ruth W. and A. Morris Williams, Jr. Professor of the Practice of Christian Ministry, will present an inaugural lecture titled “The Practice of Christian Ministry in a Consumerist Culture” on Feb. 12.

He was named to the distinguished professorship focusing on preparing students for parish ministry July 2007 while serving as professor of the practice of pastoral formation and a senior fellow with Duke Divinity School’s Pulpit & Pew program. He came to the divinity school following 30 years in parish ministry and 12 years as a United Methodist bishop. Carder retired from the Mississippi episcopacy in 2004 and joined the divinity school faculty later that year.

Carder is a member of the United Methodist University Senate and chairman of the Senate’s Commission on Theological Education.

He is the author of three books, “Sermons on United Methodist Beliefs,” “A Bishop’s Reflections,” and “Living Our Beliefs,” as well as a study guide for “Who Are We? The Doctrine, Mission, and Ministry of the United Methodist Church.” Carder has also contributed articles to several journals, including “Christian Century,” “Circuit Rider,” and “Christian Social Action.”
