Litany of Petitions
Professor Teresa Berger authored a Litany of Petitions for all whose lives have been affected by the earthquake and tsunami disaster in South Asia.
| January 6, 2005 The Litany was prayed at an Interfaith Prayer Vigil on Jan. 3 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Durham. |
A Litany
A sung response follows each petition:1- that all the lives that have been lost may find their eternal rest in You:
God ever-faithful, God ever-merciful, God of your people, hear our prayer
- that those grieving the loss of loved ones, especially their children, and the loss of entire families and communities, may find glimpses of hope and life:
God ever-faithful, God ever-merciful, God of your people, hear our prayer
- that those injured and those fighting for their lives may find solace, hope, and healing:
God ever-faithful, God ever-merciful, God of your people, hear our prayer
- that those still searching for loved ones may be sustained in their turmoil and struggle:
God ever-faithful, God ever-merciful, God of your people, hea our prayer
- that those desperately waiting for water, food, and the basic necessities of life may be able to strengthen each other and share meager resources:
God ever-faithful, God ever-merciful, God of your people, hear our prayer
- that those who are especially vulnerable – the children, the elderly, the women waiting to give birth, the sick – may find others to care for them:
God ever-faithful, God ever-merciful, God of your people, hear our prayer
- for all aid workers, that they may find within themselves deep reservoirs of strength, generosity, and compassion:
God ever-faithful, God ever-merciful, God of your people, hear our prayer
- for the international community, that its humanitarian response may be lasting and effective:
God ever-faithful, God ever-merciful, God of your people, hear our prayer
- for the earth, our fragile home, that we may live wisely and respectfully with the powers of creation:
God ever-faithful, God ever-merciful, God of your people, hear our prayer
- for the healing of the devastated coastlands of the Indian Ocean and all its life-forms:
God ever-faithful, God ever-merciful, God of your people, hear our prayer
- for the rising up of human beings who know how to heal, to restore, to rebuild, and to birth anew life and hope:
God ever-faithful, God ever-merciful, God of your people, hear our prayer
- for ourselves, that our lives may be strengthened in their witness to God’s holy and ever-healing presence:
God ever-faithful, God ever-merciful, God of your people, hear our prayer
