February 1, 2005
Durham – Ulrich Luz, professor emeritus of New Testament at the University of Bern in Switzerland, will deliver the Kenneth Willis Clark Lectures, Feb. 15 - 16 at Duke Divinity School, 2 Chapel Drive, Durham. His two lectures will address aspects of the Gospel of Matthew.
His first lecture is “The Antijudaisms in Matthew, Jesus and Us,” Tuesday, Feb. 15 in 022 Divinity Building at 9 a.m. “The Matthean Passion Narrative and Its Interpretation in Visual Arts” is in York Chapel at 12:30 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 16. Lectures are free and open to the public.
Luz’s scholarship concentrates on using the insights of conventional textual and historical/critical research along with readings on the Gospels from theologians and interpreters to gauge a text’s cultural influences and effects. His three-part commentary Matthew in History, Interpretation, Influence and Effect, displayed his methodology to a wide audience.
Established in 1984 to honor Kenneth Willis Clark, a Duke Divinity School faculty member for 36 years, the annual lecture series emphasizes New Testament studies and textual criticism.
