March 11, 2005

Donn Michael Farris, who served for more than four decades as Duke Divinity School’s librarian, died on March 5. He was 83 years old.

Also a member of the school’s faculty, Farris served from 1950 through 1992. He estimated that he had bought about 250,000 books for the library during his career, building the core of the school’s collection.

A memorial service was held on March 9 in York Chapel at the divinity school.

D. Moody Smith, Jr., George Washington Ivey Emeritus Professor of New Testament at Duke Divinity School, preached at Farris's memorial service. View Dr. Smith's sermon.
