Duke Divinity School’s Opening Convocation will be Tuesday, Aug. 30, at 10 a.m. in Duke Chapel.

The annual service, which includes a procession of faculty and staff in academic robes, marks the beginning of the year for the divinity school community. New faculty and staff will be welcomed with a ritual of anointing and blessing.

L. Gregory Jones, dean and professor of theology, will preach at the service. His sermon also inaugurates the school’s 14-part Art As Evangelism fall preaching series. Each sermon in the series is inspired by a piece of art connected with the divinity school’s 2005 addition.

Jones’ message will relate to Reconciliation, a bronze sculpture by Margaret Adams Parker, which serves as a visual interpretation of the Parable of the Prodigal Son from Luke 15.

The recently installed sculpture will be dedicated at 12:20 p.m. on the Westbrook terrace, and a reception will follow in the school’s refectory. The divinity community is invited to attend.

Art As Evangelism, which also is open to the public, continues the same week with sermons at 10 a.m. in the divinity school’s Goodson Chapel on Wednesday and Thursday.

The remaining sermons in the series, all in Goodson Chapel at 10 a.m., will be Sept. 8, Sept. 14 and 15, Sept. 22, Sept. 29, Oct. 6, Oct. 20, Oct. 27, Nov. 3, Nov. 10, and Nov. 16.
