Duke Divinity School has launched an innovative preaching series this fall that celebrates art as an expression of faith.

The 14-part "Art as Evangelism" series began Aug. 30, at the school's opening convocation, and continues throughout the fall. The remaining sermons, all of which are open to the public, will begin at 10 a.m. in the divinity school's Goodson Chapel.

Each sermon in the series, to be preached by divinity school faculty and staff, is inspired by a piece of art connected with the school's addition, which opened this spring.

"For centuries, the church and Christian disciples have used the arts to help express their faith through various media," said Susan Pendleton Jones, the divinity school's director of special programs.

"In commissioning more than a dozen unique pieces for its addition, Duke Divinity School follows in this tradition and enriches its new spaces with thought-provoking works of theological importance. The 'Art as Evangelism' series celebrates this beautiful art and, through powerful preaching, reminds us of the grounding of each piece in Scripture and the life of the church."

L. Gregory Jones, dean of the divinity school and professor of theology, preached at the Aug. 30 service. His message related to "Reconciliation," a bronze sculpture by Margaret Adams Parker which serves as a visual interpretation of the parable of the prodigal son from Luke 15.

Other works of art to be celebrated include papercuts etched onto glass that are based on Psalms 42 and 43; a large quilt depicting the Tree of Life from Revelation 22; biblical quotations carved into limestone arches; stained glass windows; and a late 19th century marble frieze depicting the baptism of Jesus.

The remaining sermons in the series will be: Aug. 31; Sept. 1, 8, 14, 15, 22 and 29; Oct. 6, 20 and 27; and Nov. 3, 10 and 16.
