South African Journalist John Allen to Lecture Nov. 9
October 25, 2006
Award-winning South African journalist John Allen, author of the authorized biography of Archbishop Desmond Tutu, will lecture at Duke Divinity School on Nov. 9.
The event, which begins at 12:30 p.m. in 0016 Westbrook, is free and open to the public. Allen will deliver insights into the intersection of South Africa’s history, social justice movement and post-independence politics.
Allen has served as president of the South African Society of Journalists and was awarded the Pringle Press Freedom Medal, South African journalism’s most prized honor. When Tutu became Archbishop of Cape Town, he asked Allen to be his communications manager and later appointed him director of communications for South Africa’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission.
Random House recently released Allen’s 500-page biography of Tutu, “Rabble-rouser for Peace.” He is visiting the United States on a book tour.
The event is co-sponsored by Duke Divinity School and Duke University’s Concilium on Southern Africa (COSA).
