Duke Divinity School will host the third joint meeting of the Society for Pentecostal Studies (SPC) and the Wesleyan Theological Society (WTS) on March 13-15.
The meeting will bring together resources from both societies for theological reflection about creation and the world of sciences. The theme will be “Sighs, Signs and Significance: Pentecostal and Wesleyan Explorations of Science and Creation.”
Randy Maddox, associate dean for faculty development and professor of theology and Wesleyan studies at Duke Divinity School, will present a plenary address March 15 titled “John Wesley’s Precedent for Theological Engagement with the Natural Sciences.” Maddox, a WTS member and a key organizer of the meeting, will use insights from John Wesley and early Methodism to articulate a contemporary theology of creation.
Other plenary speakers include:
- Jürgen Moltmann, a professor emeritus of Tübingen University in Germany. He is a member of both societies, and his work focuses on the intersection of theology of creation, science and theology of the Holy Spirit.
- Harold G. Koenig, professor of psychiatry and behavioral sciences and associate professor of medicine at Duke University Medical Center. Koenig, co-director of the Center for Spirituality, Theology and Health at Duke, will speak on religion, spirituality and health.
- SPS representative James K.A. Smith of Calvin College will speak on how a charismatic worldview informs work in theology and science.
There also will be a panel discussion of science, theology and culture by Motlmann and other speakers, as well as addresses by presidents of both the societies — Diane Leclerc of WTS and Terry Cross of SPS. More than 200 papers, panels and presentations will be offered in parallel sessions, symposia and additional meetings.
