Biography

After leaving his family's dairy farm in Mississippi, James Travis, as an ordained Baptist minister, followed the call into a ministry of pastoral care and education in health care settings in Georgia, Mississippi and North Carolina. His studies combined an interest in biblical studies, pastoral theology and sociology of religion. While his love of the outdoors has not diminished (he enjoys backpacking in the mountains), he remains committed to theological education in the context of pastoral care in the hospital. For forty years he has taught and supervised clergy and seminarians in Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE), and has championed the place and importance of theological reflection while entering into ministry with the sick and dying. Since 1987 he has taught pastoral care at Duke Divinity School and directed the CPE programs at Duke Medical Center.
