About the Director
Duke Divinity School appointed Dr. Joy Jittaun Moore as the first associate dean for Black Church Studies and Church Relations in July 2009.
Moore comes to the Divinity School after years of teaching homiletics, pastoral ministry and administrative leadership in the United Methodist Church. A native of Chicago, Ill., she succeeds the Rev. Tiffney Marley, former director of the Office of Black Church Studies.
Moore’s desire to teach led her to study at National Louis University in Evanston, Ill., from which she received a Bachelor of Arts in Education and Mathematics. She also holds a Master of Divinity from Garrett-Evangelical Seminary and a Ph.D. from Brunel University/London School of Theology in London, England in practical theology with an emphasis in homiletics.
Moore joined the Duke Divinity School administration in 2008 as associate dean for Lifelong Learning. Prior to that, she was an assistant professor of preaching at Asbury Theological Seminary in Wilmore, Ky. Before joining the faculty she served as director of Student Life there with responsibilities for programming student services and residence life.
A frequent speaker and retreat leader, Moore is the former chaplain and director of Church Relations at Adrian College, a church-related liberal arts college in Michigan, as well as has held pastorates in rural urban and suburban Michigan.
An ordained elder in the United Methodist Church (UMC), Moore was the first African-American clergy woman ordained elder in the West Michigan Conference. She also was licensed in the Progressive Baptist Church, before being called to cross-racial ministry in the UMC.
