The Office of Black Church Studies assists students of color in deriving the greatest possible value from their theological education and calls the entire Divinity School community to serious and realistic dialogue with the black church and the ethnic community. Established in the early 1970s, the office was developed in response to the needs of African Americans and other minority students. It provides counsel and advice to prospective black seminarians, especially those in undergraduate schools. The office works closely with university organizations that provide support for minority students. Through the office, the Divinity School reaches out to the black churches, black clergy and community groups in the Durham/Raleigh vicinity and across the nation. Such relationships afford excellent field settings for ministerial study and work and provide a laboratory in which both blacks and whites together can gain wider knowledge of, deeper appreciation for, and increased sensitivity to the issues and urgencies of black culture.
