Health Initiatives

The Health Initiatives of Duke Divinity School carry the mission of the school into the church’s work in the world.  Our programs draw participation from clergy, parish nurses, divinity students, medical students, nursing students, and laity interested in the interface of theology, the church, pastoral care, personal and community health.

The Duke Endowment has generously supported the development and implementation of these programs for over a decade. They include the Caring Communities program, bringing together faith communities and hospitals to cultivate communities of caring across the Carolinas; the Health and Nursing Ministries program, offering continuing education opportunities in health ministries for multiple disciplines; and our newest program, the Clergy Health Initiative, offering services and research dedicated to improving the quality of pastors’ lives.

The Health Initiatives at Duke Divinity School are committed to the formation of practices of caring.

“Health is not just the sense of completeness in ourselves but also is the sense of belonging to others and to our place; it is an unconscious awareness of community, of having in common.” — Wendell Berry

We invite faculty, students, and staff throughout Duke and neighboring academic institutions — community clergy, healthcare providers, laity, and YOU to join us.
