Hispanic House of Studies

Mission

The mission of the Hispanic House of Studies is to assist the North Carolina and Western North Carolina Annual Conferences and Duke Divinity School to support and strengthen ministries to and with Hispanics and Latinos in North Carolina.

Program and Fellowship Overview

To embrace the fastest growing population in North Carolina, both of the Annual Conferences of the United Methodist Church in the state need trained, able persons to minister in Hispanic/Latino programs. Thus the Divinity School has joined The Duke Endowment, together with the two conferences, in the formation of leaders for Hispanic/Latino ministry.

For current church leaders, the Divinity School will work collaboratively with the leadership and staff of both conferences to support work in the area of Hispanic/Latino Ministries, using the Hispanic House of Studies at Duke as a resource center.

For prospective students, the Divinity School will identify up to two students per year as Hispanic/Latino Ministry Fellows. These fellows do not have to be Hispanic or Latino, but they must demonstrate talent and interest in this ministry and commit to serving at least five years in a Hispanic/Latino ministry setting.

The Hispanic/Latino Ministry Fellowship is a merit-based scholarship sponsored by The Duke Endowment that covers the cost of full tuition expenses to Duke Divinity School. Over three years of study, the gift of a Hispanic/Latino Ministry Fellowship represents an investment of more than $50,000 in an individual student.

Recipients of the award also receive a stipend to serve their 10-week summer field education placements in Hispanic/Latino ministry settings, and participate in enrichment experiences that include colloquia with gifted scholars, leaders, and pastors to explore the “best practices” of Hispanic/Latino ministry, a formational travel experience to encounter the Methodist church in Latin America, and an alumni network upon graduation.

Recipients of the Fellowship covenant to spend at least the first five years of their service within the Hispanic/Latino ministries of the United Methodist Church in North Carolina.

How To Be Considered for the Fellowship

Prospective students who wish to be considered for the Hispanic/Latino Ministry Fellowship should contact theHispanic House of Studies to express interest.

In anticipation of the covenant to serve the Hispanic/Latino communities in the UMC in N.C., prospective fellows will be asked to discern their calling to ministry in this area.

Partners

The program is a partnership of Duke Divinity School, The Duke Endowment, and the North Carolina and Western North Carolina Annual Conferences of the United Methodist Church.

The initiative is also a part of Leadership Education at Duke Divinity, which brings together the school’s non-degree programs and scholarship on leadership development, pastoral excellence, clergy health, rural ministry, Hispanic/Latino ministry, youth formation, reconciliation, and end-of-life care.
