Student Partnerships, Exchanges and Field Education

Duke Divinity School maintains a strong exchange program with the Protestant Faculty of the University of Erlangen, Germany. This exchange brings one Erlangen student to Duke and sends one Duke student to Erlangen every year.

The Canterbury Study Abroad Program, “Anglican Spirituality Course,” brings divinity students from around the world to explore Anglican spirituality in light of diverse cultures and nations at Canterbury Cathedral in England for three weeks.

The divinity school also has developed powerful international field education experiences, with 10-week summer internships available in settings as diverse as South Africa, Uganda, Brazil and Peru. For example, the Methodist Church of Southern Africa each summer hosts three to four Duke Divinity School students who serve in rural and urban church settings in Cape Town, Johannesburg and Pretoria.

In 2006, 15 divinity school students experienced this contextual learning in seven countries. Students selected for international field education placements receive a stipend to offset travel and living expenses as well as tuition assistance.

In addition to standing field education arrangements, individual students also make private arrangements for study abroad. This study most often has taken place in Great Britain, but placements also have included locations elsewhere in Europe as well as Africa, Asia, Central America and South America. Academic credit from these placements often is transferable toward a Duke degree.

Finally, all first-year students are members of spiritual formation groups. These groups include prayer partners from students at John Wesley College, the only Methodist seminary in southern Africa.
