Brazil 2006
Pilgrimage of Pain & Hope
Journey with Duke Divinity School to South America
The Brazil Pilgrimage of Pain & Hope, held during the summer of 2006, was led by Dr. Rosalee and Rev. Samuel Ewell, Duke Alumni and Faculty at South American Theological Seminary.
During the pilgrimage, participants visited important historical, political and ecclesiastical sites throughout Brazil. They also heard the story of the church’s struggle in these contexts against social injustices and experienced the contemporary challenge to witness to Christ’s peace and justice in the global society. Participants met people who are living parables of the Gospel and shared with individuals who, amid enormous poverty and pain, have found deep joy as agents of transformation.
Participants entered a “Covenant,” committing themselves to an inward journey of personal reflection, shared worship, Bible study, discussion and true engagement with the people encountered during the travel seminars.
