Brazil 2008
Pilgrimage of Pain & Hope
Journey with Duke Divinity School to South America
Brazil Pilgrimage of Pain & Hope July 23-August 6, 2008
led by Dr. Rosalee and Rev. Samuel Ewell, Duke Alumni and Faculty at South American Theological Seminary
Join a sacred journey with members of the Duke community as we visit important historical, political and ecclesiastical sites in Brazil. Pilgrims sit by Brazil’s “pool of tears” and listen to countless stories of pain and hope from the favellas to the high rises to the slave castles. Additionally, worship, required reflective group conversations and writings are expressed in juxtaposition with historical and theological texts from the Brazilian perspective.
Pilgrims hear the story of the church’s struggle against injustice, as well as, the contemporary challenge to witness to Christ’s peace and justice in the global society. We will meet people who are living parables of the Gospel who, amidst enormous poverty and pain, have found deep joy as agents of transformation.
The opportunity will also be given to see some of the breath-taking beauty of Brazil and her people. Featured locations include Sao Paulo, Iguassu Falls, and the heart of Afro-Brazilian culture, Salvador. Double occupancy cost is $3,750, including airfare, bus travel, hotel accommodation and main meals. Continuing Education credits are available.
