South Africa 2004

Pilgrimage of Pain & Hope

Journey with Duke Divinity School to South Africa

From July 30 through August 13, 2004, students, faculty and friends of the Duke Divinity School participated in the Pilgrimage of Pain & Hope, South Africa. Participants visited important historical, political and ecclesial sites in Cape Town, Robben Island, Johannesburg, Pretoria and Soweto. While in South Africa, they heard the story of the church’s valiant struggle against apartheid, as well as today’s challenge to witness to Christ’s peace and justice in the “new” South Africa. This was not a sightseeing tour, nor primarily a fact-finding tour. The pilgrimage serves as a unique milestone in the spiritual journey of each participant, being touched by the two special gifts South Africa has to give – the pain and hope that together are the story of this land.
