Peru 2008
Spring Break Travel Seminar • March 7-15, 2008
During Spring Break 2008, a group of Divinity students will once again travel to Peru. This year we will support earthquake recovery efforts in Ica/Chincha, Peru
The Methodist Church of Peru and the North Carolina Conference of the United Methodist Church have maintained a mission covenant for 16 years. During this time Duke Divinity School has also partnered with Methodist theological schools in Peru, including the Seminario Bíblico Teológico Ministerial in Huancayo, 12,000 feet high in the Andean mountains, and a branch of this school in Ica, south of Lima at the coast.
Participating students will:
- Participate in work team to support recovery efforts
- Tour the capital of Lima
- Visit a model Children’s Village
- Visit some unforgettable sights in along the Peruvian countryside
The team will consist of no more than six students, so please apply early. The Application Deadline Is October 31, 2007. Applications can be obtained from the Office of Black Church Studies (203 Gray). Student participants will be selected by November 30. Contact Rev. Marley or Mary Beth Beauchamp to obtain an application or for additional information.
Each student will pay $1100 to participate. If accepted, a $250 deposit is due by December 15, 2007. The balance of $850 is due by January 17, 2008.
The $1,100 covers lodging and most of the food expenses; however, there are also small incidental expenses that students are expected to cover (tips, country entry fees, a few small meals while the group is in transit).
The estimated total cost of this journey is $1,900; however, each student will receive an $800 scholarship through the Fredrick Herzog Memorial Fund toward airfare.
The balance of $1100 needs to be raised by students through soliciting family, friends, and congregations for support of this mission project, promising presentations of their experiences after their return.
The focus of the seminar is the experience of a “Two-Thirds World” country, the acquaintance with its history and its churches, the development of relationships with clergy and laity of the Methodist Church of Peru and other denominations. Spanish is preferred ; however not required.
