Reflecting on student experiences in South Africa, Bishop Kenneth L. Carder says friendship with those who see the world from its underside, its suffering and oppression, is one of the best ways to develop a new and clearer lens into the gospel and the church’s mission.

Taking notions of “excellence” down into the nitty-gritty of pastoral life, a group of DC-area priests have been learning how to bring the hidden problem of domestic violence out into the light and to use the full resources of the church to help those who are its victims.

All pastors can at times feel as lonely and as lost as Elijah in the desert, says the Rev. Kate Harvey. But, just as Elijah found out, God does not leave us without witnesses and friends to save us and themselves from loneliness and futility.

SPE project officials and participants who want to learn more about the role philanthropy can play in their ongoing sustainability are invited to enroll in “Faith and Fundraising,” a new class being offered next year at the Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis.
