Fred Edie
Faculty Director

Fred Edie grew up playing sports, swimming, fishing and swatting gnats on a small island near Savannah, Georgia. He holds degrees from Furman University, Vanderbilt University and recently completed his Ph.D. at Emory University.

Fred is a United Methodist pastor and has worked in youth ministry for many of the last 20 years. He has also written numerous articles and curricular pieces on Christian formation and currently teaches in the ministries division of Duke Divinity School where he is the assistant professor of the practice of Christian education.

Fred is married to Alison Hester Edie, nurse-practitioner and artist, and together they have two children, Stewart, 15, and Rebekah, 12. The Edies also have two dogs, Bridget (big and mellow) and Abigail (little and yappy).

Katherine Smith
Assistant Director
(919) 660-3542

Katherine Smith is a native of Music City, U.S.A. (aka Nashville) and, after years of resistance, has finally come to appreciate country music. After earning a degree in English at Princeton University, Katherine served for three years with a non-profit civic leadership organization affiliated with the university, having fun helping college students discern their calling. Then she discerned a calling herself and made her way to Duke Divinity School, where she is finishing her third year in the Masters of Divinity program.

Katherine joined the staff of the Duke Youth Academy in May 2007. When she’s not running, drinking milkshakes, or traveling around the country visiting friends, Katherine enjoys spending time with her husband, Bart, who she met while writing freelance for Duke Athletics (go Blue Devils!) Katherine and Bart live in Durham and attend church in Raleigh, NC, where Katherine is pursuing ordination in the Presbyterian Church (USA).
