Lecture Summary
Building on a clip from the film “The Matrix,” Dr. Carter spoke with students about the power and importance of God’s creation.
He described how baptism enables us to see the world – God’s creation – as God wants it to be. Christian discipleship helps us live as God intended.
Dr. Carter also responded to students’ practical questions about evolution and creation. (The discussion was lively – we’re deep into baptismal waters now!) By avoiding typical answers and clichés, Dr. Carter helped us think more carefully about this contested issue by deepening our own sense of the centrality of God as Creator.
Reflections on the Lecture
In one mentor group discussion, student Jake Shapiro asked (referring to Dr. Carter’s lecture), “It was the high of my day; are lectures in graduate school here always like that?” Answer: yes!
After our Pentecostal worship service, Lyndsay Mosely commented, “God works in mysterious ways and as far as I know, I don’t have a problem with any of ’em.”
A few of Dr. Carter's fantastic quotes...
“Our existence is a gift [from God] – not a necessity.”
“To pray is to be a theologian, and to be a theologian is to pray.”
“The difference of God is God’s sheer closeness to us. God even knows more about us than we do about ourselves, which allows us to reflect the image of God.”
“Our practices must not be allowed to be severed from our profession of faith.”
Dorm Life 101...
“My room has a thermostat?”
“What do you mean I need a key to get into the bathroom!?”
“Does anybody have some shampoo I can borrow?”
What's ahead...
Dr. Thea Portier-Young will lecture on Covenant. We will share a meal with people from Holy Family Episcopal Church.
Tomorrow will be the first day for service projects. We’re ready to go meet Christ in our neighbors.
