Gleaning...

The DYA crew departed Duke on Saturday at 7:30 a.m. and packed two buses. We arrived in Phaizon, N.C. shortly after 9:30.

In accordance with the Old Testament, we gleaned collard greens in order to provide food for the poor. After a brief instruction session from a representative of the Society of St. Andrew, all 54 students and 24 staff members began filling their bags with collard greens.

We laughed, sang, interacted, drank lots of water and celebrated our opportunity to serve God and our neighbor. Within an hour we had stuffed two trucks with approximately 9,200 pounds of greens, which will provide 27,000 servings.

Worship in the Fields...

On our return home we stopped at a rest stop for lunch and to worship together.

Chris Brady, our service coordinator, led us in worship. He called us to new awareness of the poverty, strife and struggle that exist in the world. Chris called us to reconsider how we perceive, interact and care for our neighbor.

Even more, Chris demanded that we do all we can for peace, justice, reconciliation and wholeness.

Sabbath...

“Observe the Sabbath and keep it holy”…

We all gathered as a community to worship in Duke Chapel; a few students even rose early to attend Holy Cross Catholic Church prior to attending worship at Duke Chapel.Rev. Craig Kocher preached from Matthew about the wheat and the weeds.

Following worship we ate lunch together and listened to Elizabeth exhort the importance of Sabbath rest. We spent the afternoon in Sabbath rest in order that we might be attentive to the will and work of God while also refueling our tanks and enjoying one another’s company.

What's ahead...

Monday we return to our daily schedule of morning prayer, plenary sessions, worship workshops, evening worship and covenant groups.

Dr. Warren Smith will lecture on the resurrection, and we will participate in our final arts village sessions.
