Reflections on the Lecture

Today Fred helped us re-imagine our baptisms. Christian baptism is not merely an experience that occurred on one particular day; rather Christian baptism is a sustaining event that unfolds over a lifetime, he explained. As baptized children of God, we are invited to consider our vocation. In light of our baptism the question is not, “will it be ministry for me?” but, rather, “what form of ministry will it be?”

Quotable Quotes from the Plenary Lecture

Theological Jargon of the Day: The Alliterative Cs: Creation, Covenant, Christ, Church, Calling, Caring, Coming Reign of God

“The faith of the early church was the result of symbols [i.e. baptism, Lord’s supper, communal prayer…] deeply lived.”

“Consider ‘Flavor-Ice.’ Without water all you have is high fructose corn syrup and red dye #40. With water you’ve got a delectable late night tasty treat.”

Overheard in the halls of the divinity school...

“My favorite thing was the plenary this morning—because that’s why I’m here: for the theology.”
    — Ryan Lorenz
“I want to remember that!” referring to all the baptismal themes throughout the scriptures
    — Allison Kibbe
“I was fascinated with the ‘Three-fold focus’ where God speaks, then you go into the water and then you’re ready for a new ministry.”
    — Rossie Izlar

What’s ahead...

Tomorrow we are looking forward to our first Hospitality Lunch, provided by The Church of the Holy Family, Episcopal of Chapel Hill, N.C.

Our lecturer tomorrow for the plenary session will be Dr. Ellen F. Davis, Associate Professor of Bible and Practical Theology. She will speak to us on the theme of God and Creation.

We will also be getting our first taste of the Arts Village, where we will learn more about communing with God through creative media.
