This weekend was filled with activity and involvement while still leaving plenty of time for rest and reflection. At 7 a.m. Saturday, Duke Youth Academy students and staff boarded buses and headed to a farm east of Durham to harvest collard greens with the Society of St. Andrew. In just over two hours we filled two trucks with produce, which went directly to a local food bank to be distributed to those in need.

Following a picnic lunch, we had a worship service outside in God's creation. Service and Hospitality Coordinator Meredith Stewart's sermon called us to meditate on the activity of the morning and the responsibility we have to the poor. She taught us that we must sit at the feet of the poor and listen to them. It's only by learning their story that we can understand the state of being spiritually poor.

We were treated to lessons in contra dancing after dinner and then enjoyed traditional DYA mocha java milkshakes.

A large group of students attended a Catholic mass off campus with several mentors before taking part in the Sunday morning service at Duke Chapel with the whole community. We spent the afternoon intentionally observing Sabbath rest. Following a pizza dinner, we enjoyed cheesecake while applauding the gifts and talents of our community members at the DYA Dessert Theater. The night ended with a Catholic evening prayer service.

What’s ahead...

We are excited about our second week! Tomorrow morning we will hear from Dr. Warren Smith, Assistant Professor of Historical Theology, on the topic of Christ’s resurrection.

This week’s worship services will be largely led by students. We hope to incorporate the experiences we’ve gained from the first week to enrich our participation in worship.

Mt. Level Missionary Baptist Church from Durham, N.C. will serve our hospitality lunch tomorrow.
