Day 10 - A Community of Caring

Students play 'Red Rover' during fun-time-on-the-quad before dinner.

At a Glance

Theme:
The Spirit-Born Church: A Community of Caring

Faculty Speaker:
Professor Tonya Armstrong, Lecturing Fellow in Pastoral Care

Lectionary Texts:
Micah 6:6-8; Psalm 23; Galatians 6:1-10; Luke 10:25-37

Evening Worship:
Mentor Whitney Fauntleroy and Head Residence Advisor Emily Dueitt preached tonight in a “conversation style.” They shared their experiences as students in DYA in 2001 and as staff members for the last two years. They shared why they came to DYA as students, how it affected them and what keeps them coming back to this community of caring. The third student-led worship was accented by a musical version of the 23rd Psalm by Matthew Locklair and Annalise Mesler. The students also portrayed the Good Samaritan parable.

Reflections on the Lecture

Professor Tonya Armstrong spoke with us today about pastoral care as members of a Christian community. We talked about giving care for individuals, families, communities and the environment. We discussed different types of care that can be given, such as close attention and painstaking application, upkeep maintenance, watchful oversight, charge or supervision, and attentive assistance. Biblical examples of caring can be found, among other places, in Psalm 23, John 10, Ruth and Luke. We explored the differences in sympathy, mercy, empathy and compassion.

Quotable Quotes from the Plenary Lecture

“All Christians are called to love our neighbor, and care is a powerful means to this end.”

“We should be people who are willing to give care as well as receive it.

Overheard in the halls of the divinity school...

“I found my life’s calling today — I’m going to be a farmer!”
    — one student’s response after participating in a service project at Anathoth Community Garden
“When you say all God’s creatures, do you mean even mosquitoes?”
    — student in response to Professor Armstrong’s lecture

What's ahead...

Tomorrow we will welcome members of Cedar Grove United Methodist Church, Efland, N.C., to our community as they serve us our last hospitality meal, which has been termed a ‘simplicity meal’ in which we will learn more about where our food comes from.

Our plenary lecturer for tomorrow will be Dr. Amy Laura Hall, Assistant Professor of Theological Ethics. She will speak to us on the theme of “The Spirit-Born Church: Seeing Clearly and Acting Differently.”

We are excited about tomorrow’s afternoon activities. Five different prayer-practice workshops will be available, and everyone will have the opportunity to participate in two of them.
