Reflections on the Lecture

Today’s plenary was exciting and challenging.  Dr. Carter led a discussion on fresh ways of thinking about creation.  Rather than thinking of the doctrine of creation as merely a collection of words about the world’s origin, Dr. Carter challenged us to think about creation within the context of God’s covenantal commitment to never abandon the world.

To explicate his point, Dr. Carter showed an action-packed scene from the movie “I, Robot” in which a confused man-made robot wails, “What am I?”  From here we explored the way rightly thinking about our origins is directly related to our identities, which is related to our function and purpose in the world.

Quotable Quotes

“When we live into our baptisms, we are putting on display another world.”
    — Dr. J. Kameron Carter during plenary

    “They’re so confused…but it’s a beautiful thing.”
    — DYA staff commenting on the growth and learning curve of the students

“With God, it’s not ‘What you get is what you see.’ You get more.”
    — Preacher Lisa Yebuah during evening worship

Other Activities

Today was our first Arts Village.  The DYA artists-in-residence, along with musical accompaniment by staff and fellows, offered an “Artists Showcase” highlighting their own craft and introducing the way in which art offers an avenue for our participation in and celebration of God’s creative ability.  We welcomed guests from Urban Hope for our first hospitality dinner, and they provided two delicious meal options: a Tex-Mex theme and a Hawaiian theme

What’s Ahead...

Tomorrow morning Duke Old Testament Ph.D. student Chad Eggleston will lecture on the topic of covenant. In the afternoon, we’ll spread out across Durham and Chapel Hill as we engage the local community in service to local churches and organizations. We’ll welcome the Rev. Kevin Baker and the Rev. Craig Kocher, who will lead us in evening worship.
